Commonly more of a nuisance than a serious medical complication, yeast infections (Yeast Infections or Candidiasis) are a frequent cause of alarm and subsequent visits to medical professionals. Usually due to a disruption in the balance of the natural flora of bacteria in the vagina, yeast infections are most commonly caused by the fungus Candida albicans. There are many reasons as to what causes the disruption of natural flora within the vagina. Some of the more common causes include a person’s diet (Body Weight | Psyche), medications, changes in the vaginal pH balance, other medical disorders such as diabetes (Male Yeast Infection Causes & Symptoms), as well as environmental factors. However as vast as the causes may be, the treatments of the infection itself can be quite simple. One simple, yet very effective home remedy often unknown is the use of regular (and often quite delicious) yogurt!
Yogurt Helps Treat Yeast Infections
As just mentioned, disruptions in the vaginal pH may cause yeast infections (How can I prevent yeast infections?). Yeast itself does not thrive in acidic environments. When the vagina (Vaginal Yeast Infection) becomes less acidic (more basic) yeast begins to flourish. So naturally, returning the acidity of the vagina will help quench the yeast’s ability to grow. Yogurt contains a natural and body friendly bacteria (Lactobacillus acidophilus) which naturally produce acid. As the yogurt’s bacteria increases the amount of acid, the yeast decreases returning to normal amounts. Also, as the Lactobacillus (Lactobacillus Wiki Page) produces acid, it also creates hydrogen peroxide as a by-product which also aids in the resolution of the yeast.
What to Know & Where to Start With Yogurt & Yeast Infections
You do not need to look hard to find yogurt. Just about every supermarket has a dairy section with yogurt in it. A good start would be to eat yogurt on a daily basis to help keep everything in balance. Once you think you may have a yeast infection, increase your daily yogurt consumption. However, often times due to its location on the vaginal and groin area, yeast can be a bit difficult to get rid of. In cases of more stubborn yeast infections, application of the yogurt directly to the affected area may prove more fruitful. By applying yogurt directly to the groin or vaginal area two to three times a day for about an hour each time will help rid the yeast and return the normal pH balance.
What Kind of Yogurt to Use for Yeast Infections
Make sure to find unflavored and unsweetened yogurt. The more natural the better. Often times, the sweeteners found in the flavored yogurts can exacerbate the problem rather than help alleviate it. Also, read the label to make sure the Lactobacillus bacteria is present in the yogurt as this is the active ingredient necessary to ward off the yeast.
Tips on Yogurt & Yeast Infections
When applying the yogurt to the groin and vaginal area, make sure there is a thick layer present on the skin to cover the area completely. Also, cover beyond the area of irritation as there may be fungus growing in the border areas but aren’t apparent with the naked eye.
