I think I broke something! Penile Fracture
Penile Fracture: Doc, I think I Broke Something…
Just recently a young man, mid thirties, came to me see on an emergency basis complaining about severe penile pain, bruising, and discoloration. It took only a quick look to determine that he had got penile fracture. He looked at me very surprised stating that “…how can I break my penis? There is no bone in there. So what’s the deal with penile fracture?”
Well, there is indeed a slight risk that you might suffer a penis fracture/penile fracture if you go wild during intercourse. Penis fracture or penile fracture is not breaking a bone, but a rupture of the tunica albuginea (a though fibrous tissue surrounding the corpora) of the corpus cavernosum (the erectile body), which may extend to the urethra and corpus spongiosum (the spongy body) The main causes of penile fracture or penis fracture include coitus, sudden forced bending of the erected penis, rolling over in bed, and masturbation. Penile fracture or penis fracture would typically present itself as a cracking sound, followed by penile swelling and pain, edema, hematoma (severe bruising), and “eggplant deformity.”
What to Do if You Suffered A Penile Fracture or Penis Fracture?
The mainstay in penile fracture or penis fracture treatment is immediate surgery which will provide adequate functional and cosmetic results, with minimal complications.
If you decide not to consult your doctor and let it heal by itself, there are chances you will end up with several potential complications, such as penile curvature, pain during erection, fibrotic penile lesions, arteriovenous fistula, infection, and erectile dysfunction.
During the last 30+ years of my practice I have seen and treated quite a few cases of penile fracture or penis fracture. If you notice any of the above mentioned symptoms, please do not hesitate or be ashamed to contact us for immediate treatment. Accidents happen, it’s just important to prevent further complications.
