Bladder Stone Removal Procedure
Bladder stone (also called cystolith or vesical calculus) is a “stone” found in the urinary bladder which consists of mineral accumulation.
If the urine becomes concentrated (e.g. due to dehydration) minerals like calcium and magnesium crystallize and form various sized stones in the bladder; infections are another important risk factors for bladder stone formation. Many individuals with bladder stones may be asymptomatic and the stones may incidentally discovered on plain radiography. If bladder stones become symptomatic, patents usually report severe sharp pain in the lower abdomen and lower back which comes in waves, and which may be associated with nausea, vomiting, chills, and in severe cases accompanied by blood in urine.
Diagnosis of bladder stones is made by urine analysis, ultrasound, x-rays, and cystoscopy.
Small bladder stones are usually treated with the intake of plenty of fluids in order to facilitate their passage through the urethra. If stones are too big to pass, other interventions may be necessary to provide relief.
