What is nymphomania?
There is a long-standing debate in the medical community if in fact, nymphomania(also known as compulsive sexual behavior) is a mental illness. The term nymphomaniac is antiquated in the medical field. Now, those who embody nymphomaniac traits are referred to as those with hypersexuality or sex addicts. The uncontrollable nature of a nymphomaniac’s risky sexual behaviors can be dangerous to not only oneself but of others. The term nymphomania only applies to females but is also applied to homosexual men. The heterosexual male term is called satyriasis.According to The Journal of Sexual Medicine from a 2012 study, 54% of hypersexual persons report that their behavior began to problematic before age 18. Another 30% began between ages of 18-25. This proves that this behavior becomes apparent early in life.
Common Behaviors of Nymphomania:
A nymphomaniac’s behavior if often unwanted, repetitive, and often ritualistic. The most common of risky sexual behaviors by nymphomaniacs is promiscuity. In addition to sexual behaviors,
obsession and lack of problem-solving capabilities can be found in sex addicts.Similar to other addictions, people with hypersexuality partake in sexual actives, not only for pleasure but as an escape from negative emotions (stress, sadness, anxiety, loneliness) This can result in feelings of shame, guilt, embarrassment and inadequacy.
Causes:
Sexual impulsive and compulsive sexual behaviors may be associated with an imbalance of brain chemicals. An imbalance of neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine, can play a paramount role in the regulation of pleasure and mood.Genetics, history of abuse, dysfunctional family behavior, and other psychological problems such as depression can also be a root cause for hypersexuality.
