Carbs, Beer and Testosterone

Carbs, Beer and Testosterone

Excess alcohol consumption can have a negative effect on a man’s physiology.
Many different elements and compounds that make up beer add to the blockage testosterone and are considered overall unhealthy.

Xanthohumol

According to the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) a compound found in beer called Xanthohumol has anti-cancer properties. According to Clarissa Gerhauser, Ph.D., group leader of cancer chemoprevention in the Division of Epigenomics and Cancer Risk Factors at the German Cancer Research Center, in Heidelberg, Germany, “Xanthohumol still reduces the effects of hormone signaling, such as gene expression, measured in the prostate tissue.” Although this is significant in the oncology world, Xanthohumol blocks testosterone and can have a negative effect on your hormone levels.

Estrogen

As a result of your body extracting alcohol from your system, estrogen levels rise. This causes Gynecomastia and also a decrease of testosterone levels. If you body has low levels of testosterone, there is a higher chance of gaining weight and losing muscle mass. This results in adverse body composition and can lead to low self-esteem and lack of confidence.

Processed Carbohydrates and Sugars

Drinking beer might be a fun pastime, but it has little nutritional value. Most of of beer is filled with processed carbohydrates and sugars. These are considered “empty calories” because they do not act as food and cannot fill our stomachs like a meal can. The excessive calories of drinking beer can result in weight gain- aka a “beer belly” we see in many men.
