Procedure: Prostate Biopsy
The prostate gland undergoes changes while we age. While BPH (benign prostate hyperplasia) is a benign condition, prostate cancer should be evaluated if the levels of PSA (prostate specific antigen) rise fast, the prostate growth is extensive over a short period of time, or the structure suggest hardness and lumps.
Prostate biopsy is a procedure performed by Dr. Elist in order to determine the pathology of a lumpy prostate and initiate the right intervention if cancer is diagnosed.
During prostate gland biopsy(Prostate Biopsy) small sample(s) of the prostate tissue are removed and examined under a microscope.
For a prostate biopsy, a thin needle is inserted through the rectum (transrectal biopsy), through the urethra, or through the area between the anus and scrotum (perineum). A transrectal biopsy is the most common method used. The tissue samples taken during the biopsy are examined for cancer cells.
