Marijuana and Sperm Count

Research conducted over the past 10 years indicates that marijuana has a negative effect on sperm count. Sperm count is one of the most important factors when it comes to getting pregnant— if a man’s sperm count is low, there is a low likelihood he can father a child biologically. So, if you are an active marijuana user and trying to get pregnant, it is important to know the research and effects it can have on your fertility.

The Data

A study conducted in 2015 by the American Journal of Epidemiology examined 1,215 Danish men. Some of these men were active marijuana users, some frequently smoked marijuana, and some didn’t use it at all.

Those who were regular marijuana users (more than once per week) were associated with a 28% lower sperm concentration and a 29% lower total sperm count. Men who used marijuana (more than once per week) and additionally used other recreational drugs reduced their sperm concentration by 52% and total sperm count by 55%.

Enhance Your Fertility

Overall, excess weed smoking can lower your chances of getting pregnant. In general, poor health can do the same. It can also lower your libidio. The good news is that many of these damaging habits can be reversed and are not permanent. If you are a chronic marijuana smoker, it is not too late to cut back.
