Is sex addiction a symptom of NPD?

Sex addiction and Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) have a strong connection to one another. A study published by the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy has strongly suggests that sex (and porn) addicts are almost always extremely self-absorbed. Thus we can conclude that sexual narcissism, an egocentric pattern of sexual behavior, is closely associated with narcissistic personality disorders.
The Intersection of Sex Addiction and Narcissism
When a narcissist uses sex to promote and exaggerate their own self views and build up self-esteem it is categorized as sexual narcissism. Sexual narcissists lead people to believe that their sexual skills are of the highest quality and they command their sexual prowess in intense ways. Sexual narcissists are in constant need of validation and are often characterized as self-aggrandizing, selfish, grandiose, and charming. When sex addiction is combined with NPD, unhealthy and abusive relationships can form.

A narcissist’s ability to project perfection when it comes to sex can portend their inner negative feelings. Narcissism is a reflection on low self esteem and poor self image. A 2002 study conducted by the University of Giessen found that narcissistic men were more likely to have lower self-esteem. This resulted in egocentric sexual behavior.
Past trauma can make people feel shame. This can influence the way one
behaves with people socially. Addictive fantasies and intense sexual behavior can result in pseudo connection and have a negative impact on relationships.
Sex addicts use fantasy and behavior, not for pleasure but for control. Sex can provide an escape, and sex addicts use this escape in order to avoid negative emotions and psychological disorders. They have little intention of seeking to feel better outside of sex and would rather go for the “quick fix”.
