Frenulum breve

The frenulum of the penis is the elastic band of tissue under the head of the penis. It is typically long and allows for full movement and retraction of the foreskin so that it lies smoothly. Yet in a small percentage of men, the frenulum is too short to pull, which is called frenulum breve. Due to its sensitivity of the penis, frenulum breve can cause difficulty in penile movement, bleeding, and painful erections. It is estimated that this condition affects 5% of uncircumcised men and can happen during sex or other activity. Luckily, there are several treatment options.

Circumcision:

Circumcision is a minor surgical procedure that removes excess skin from the tip of the penis. Though many men are ‘attached’ to their foreskin, circumcision can reduce the risk of inflammatory and infectious diseases by improving overall physical and genital hygiene.

Frenuloplasty:

A Frenuloplasty procedure allows men to keep their foreskin. During Frenuloplasty, a small horizontal incision is made on the frenulum, which is then sutured back to increase overall length. Done under local anesthesia, it takes about 20 minutes. Patients do not need complete circumcision after frenuloplasty and the satisfaction rates are high.
Unfortunately, frenulum breve does not resolve on its own. After both circumcision and frenuloplasty, movement of foreskin is greatly increased. Patients report a remarkable reduction in pain during erections. The patient can resume his normal sexual activities within a few weeks of undergoing surgery without any experiencing changes in the quality of sex life.
