Coffee and Sperm Count

Coffee and Sperm Count

The Nutrition Journal in 2017 performed a systematic review on the relation between coffee/caffeine intake and parameters of male fertility including sperm ploidy and semen quality. The literature suggests that caffeine intake, possibly through sperm DNA damage, may negatively affect male fertility. Evidence from epidemiological research on semen and fertility has been deemed inconclusive.
In their research, they discovered that there were no harmful effects on caffeine intake on sperm count, but only up to a certain point. The study found that men who drank more than four cups of coffee tend to have more abnormally shaped sperm. For men who drink coffee about 3 times a day, no negative effects on their reproductive systems were recorded.
In the past, studies have found  that caffeine consumption can lead to sperm DNA damage. This DNA damage is caused by the formation of double-strand DNA breakage and abnormal number of chromosomes (aneuploidy).
