TRIBULUS TERRESTRIS

Tribulus terrestris is a natural herb, commonly known as the puncture vine that has been used for centuries in Europe. In Ayurveda (India's Science of Life"), Tribulus terrestris is known as a tonic treating genito-urinary troubles, and has been prescribed in treating impotence, and as a stimulant to help enhance sexual drive and performance. On the athletic front, this potent herb has been studied and observed to enhance LH (luteinizing hormone) production and boost testosterone levels. This powerful extract, like DHEA and Androstenedione, can help elevate testosterone levels safely and its effects have been coveted by Bulgarian athletes for decades.
When scientists first started researching Tribulus terrestris, it was for the sole purpose of discovering a safe, natural treatment for sexual deficiencies in men. Tests on healthy men ages 28-45, demonstrated that a five-day treatment with three capsules of standardized extract 45% (250 mg each) per day significantly increased libido while levels of testosterone increased by 30% or more! Additional studies confirmed the previous study, and also showed that in addition to a rise in testosterone levels, subjects saw not only an increase in libido, but frequency and strength of erections, increased number of spermatozoa, increased spermatozoa motility, and recovery from sexual activity. Other findings that were noticed included: a reduction of cholesterol, improved mood and increased self-confidence.
Benefits for women include, increased production of follicle-stimulating hormone and estradiol, which leads to increased reproductive function and eases menopausal symptoms. Tribulus reduces sodium and fluid retention, contains anti-urolithiatic (urinary\kidney stone preventing) and litholytic (dissolving) properties, and lowers blood pressure.
Just with any supplement, moderation is the key when taking Tribulus. Doses of 1,500 mg taken evenly throughout the day, as suggested by experts, is a safe guide-line. Research studies concluded that no adverse affects where noted from it's use. Presently no toxicity or negative effects exist when Tribulus is used as a nutritional supplement.
Tribulus terrestris is not manufactured by the body, however, prolonged usage could down-regulate it's effects and make it less potent. Long-term usage and its effects have not yet been studied, therefore cycling Tribulus might be advantageous. One way is 3 weeks on, followed by 2 weeks off. Knowing your body and its limits is as crucial to proper supplementation as it is to proper training.
